1. Philadelphia Alley: Once known as Cow's and Dueler's Alley, Philadelphia Alley is one of the longest and probably the most beautiful. When I conduct a tour group to this alley, I get many comments of "Wow!" and "Oh my goodness.". This alley is, by most accounts, where one of the most infamous duels in Charleston history took.

William Johnson Sr. (ca. 1741-1818) was a New York-born blacksmith who settled in Charleston in 1766. As a member of Charleston Battalion of Artillery during the Revolution, he was among a number of Charlestonians arrested by the British in the autumn of 1780 and imprisoned at St. Augustine.

This pedestrian path in historic Charleston stretches just one block, running north from Queen Street to Cumberland between Church and State. Although limited in length, it nevertheless is widely known for its quiet shade and lowcountry charm. Philadelphia Alley To get to the other 2 alleys, go to the intersection of Church and Queen and head south on Church. But wait. Look north and photograph the steeple of St. Phillips Episcopal Church. Then go a few feet south on Church St and stop to photograph the pink and black church of Gothic Revival architecture.

Cow Alley (Philadelphia Street) was "remembered as the scene of a duel one bright Sunday morning, when Gen. William Moultrie 'pinked his man in beauty's quarrel.'" Apparently, General Moultrie had a particular grievance with an unidentified gentleman.
